Why buyers look to Greece

Greece brings together a long coastline, a mature tourism economy and property prices that still sit below much of the eurozone. Athens carries year round rental demand, while the islands and the mainland coast live off the summer season. The snapshot below is the national picture: what a square metre sells for, what it rents for, and the yield between the two.

Buying here as a foreign national

A foreign buyer can purchase property in Greece with no special permit outside a small number of border and island zones. The purchase runs through a Greek tax number, a local bank account and a notary, and a lawyer checks the title before any money moves. Everything is priced in euro, so the rate you convert at and the rate you borrow at both change what the property costs you. Both are below.

Greece is not one market

A national average hides the thing that decides a purchase. Central Athens rents all year to tenants and to visitors, the northern suburbs sell on schools and space, and an island address lives on a season that runs a few months. The table below splits the same figures by area, so the gap between them is visible rather than averaged away.
